VIB Metabolomics Core Leuven
The field of metabolomics explores the entirety of biochemical reactions occurring at the cellular, organ, or organismal level. It has long intrigued scientists - indeed, it was among the earliest -omics fields to be studied. As early as the 1920s, researchers like Otto Warburg recognized that a comprehensive understanding of the biochemical pathways underlying disease could unlock new therapeutic strategies. Warburg’s discovery that cancer cells exploit the glycolysis pathway remains one of the most prominent molecular hallmarks of cancer metabolism today.
Studying metabolism is inherently challenging. It encompasses far more than central carbon pathways; its complexity lies in the connectivity of biochemical reactions. Understanding how these pathways are wired and interact allows researchers to dissect the intricate molecular machinery of life. This network reveals not only the enzymes and proteins involved, but also the transcripts and genes that regulate them. As such, mapping the metabolic “roadmap” is a powerful tool for developing improved treatments across a wide spectrum of diseases.
At the Ghesquière lab, we are a technology-driven group dedicated to advancing and applying novel mass spectrometry-based technologies in metabolomics. Our credo, “Technology through Biology, Biology through Technology”, reflects our commitment to bridging the gap between technological innovation and biological insight.
